RESEARCH CONDITIONS

Terms of Use

The research and acceptable-use principles that apply to Their War during its controlled family-history validation stage.

Last updated: 20 August 2026

Controlled validation service

Their War is currently a limited family and military-history research service under controlled validation. These terms describe the research principles that apply during the pilot; fuller consumer and account terms will be introduced before an open public launch.

Historical research is not certainty

Their War aims to distinguish established evidence from inference and context, but no historical research service can guarantee that every record survives, that every index is complete, or that every family memory is correct. Candidate identities and individual facts may require correction when better evidence appears.

The family is asked to confirm the person before deeper research. That confirmation establishes which person the case concerns; it does not turn every discovery-stage statement into a verified fact.

Third-party records and links

Their War may point to or quote limited evidence from third-party archives, official publications and websites. Those materials remain owned or controlled by their respective rights holders and are subject to their own access, copyright and reuse terms. Access to a catalogue entry does not mean Their War has examined the underlying archival document.

Family-provided material

Participants should only upload photographs, documents or stories they are entitled to provide for family-history research. Supplying material does not transfer ownership to Their War. Participants should avoid unnecessary private or sensitive information about living people.

Generated stories

The narrative is a presentation of the research, not a replacement for the evidence. Where a statement cannot be responsibly established, the service should preserve that uncertainty rather than inventing a missing fact. Historical context about a regiment, unit or battle must not be converted into a personal claim without evidence connecting the individual to it.

Acceptable use

The service must not be used to harass, profile or investigate living people, to impersonate another person, to bypass archive access restrictions, or to redistribute third-party collections in breach of their terms.

Pilot changes

Because this is a controlled validation build, research methods and presentation may be improved as problems are discovered. Material changes affecting how participant information is used will be reflected in the Privacy Policy.
